What PrestaShop really costs. Free software, hosting, modules, freelancer and agency ranges for an online store in Spain.

How much PrestaShop costs is not a licence fee. Classic CMS downloads for free. The price of a PrestaShop store is hosting, theme, modules, payment gateway and, if you are not building it yourself, a freelancer or an agency. In Spain in 2026 that runs from a few hundred euros DIY to €5,000–€25,000 for an agency project.

The old “€1,500 to €3,000” range is tight for a SME with integrations, and high for someone who only installs the software. Split platform cost from the cost of making it sell.

Cost of a PrestaShop store

PrestaShop is free. The store is not

PrestaShop Classic is open source. No monthly fee to the vendor, no sales commission for using the software. You pay for infrastructure and people.

PrestaShop also sells Hosted (hosting and updates included, from about €24/month ex VAT) and Enterprise (PaaS). Most Spanish shops still run Classic on their own hosting. That is the base for this breakdown.

Installing the zip does not leave you with a store. You still need a theme, payments, shipping, transactional email, GDPR, product sheets, redirects and a minimum of SEO.

Budget ranges

Indicative figures for Spain, in line with what PrestaShop publishes and with agency work. Not a fixed quote.

DIY. €200–€600 in year one. Decent cheap hosting, a €50–€200 theme, essential modules (€100–€300). The hidden invoice is 30–80 hours of your time.

Official install or starter kit. €350–€750. The CMS lands on the server with a theme. Catalogue and operations stay yours.

Freelancer. €2,000–€8,000. Integrated design, gateways, a handful of modules and training. A senior profile in Spain often bills €300–€800/day.

Agency. €5,000–€25,000. Architecture, design, build, QA, training and a month of support. Multistore, ERP or B2B sit at the top of the range.

The price of a PrestaShop brochure page is not the price of a store. Product sheets, checkout and stock multiply the scope. Compared with Shopify, you pay a platform fee every month there; here you pay more up front and less in licence.

Line items that show up on the invoice

Hosting. From €8–€15/month on decent shared hosting to €40–€80/month on a VPS once catalogue and traffic grow. Classic does not include the server.

Domain and SSL. Domain around €10–€15/year. The certificate usually comes with hosting.

Theme. Free to test. Premium, €50–€200. Custom, thousands in design plus integration.

Modules. Payments (Redsys, PayPal, Bizum), SEO, search, merchant feeds. A reasonable launch pack fits in €200–€600. Some are subscriptions (€20–€200/month for marketing tools).

Maintenance. Classic does not update itself. €100–€400/month with a technician, or internal time on every security patch.

PrestaShop website cost breakdown

What pushes the price up

A large catalogue (combinations, packs, B2B price lists).

ERP, POS or warehouse integration.

Several languages and several VAT rates.

Design that will not fit a marketplace theme.

Performance (cache, CDN, images) when a stock theme misses Core Web Vitals.

Each of those is development, not “one more module”. That is why two PrestaShop stores on the same CMS do not share a budget.

How to cut cost without gutting the store

Use a premium theme and change logo, colour and type. Save custom design for when the theme limits conversion.

Launch with the catalogue that actually sells. Adding SKUs later is cheaper than building 2,000 empty sheets on day one.

Pick modules that are actually maintained. Three cheap extensions that collide cost more than one good one.

Do not cheap out on hosting the first year of real traffic. A saturated shared box costs more in lost sales than the tariff gap.

Example of a store built on PrestaShop

The useful number is not “how much does PrestaShop cost?”. It is “who builds checkout, catalogue and SEO, and at what scope?”. With that, the range stops being a slogan and becomes a project line.
